Aitutaki Atoll - One of the Cook Islands, Aitutaki makes this list as an "almost atoll"—its consists of a lagoon within an encircling atoll, with a significant area of highland on one side. Polynesians first settled Aitutaki in the early 13th century. Aitutaki, Cook Islands is in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean and centre of the Polynesian Triangle. See Travel to Aitutaki about getting to the Cook Islands and on to Aitutaki. Photos link on the right of this webpage will show you some of the 14 uninhabited islets (motus) on the barrier reef surrounding the Aitutaki Lagoon offering some.

Aitutaki is an " almost atoll ". It has a maximum elevation of approximately metres with the hill known as Maunga Pu close to its northernmost point. The land area of the atoll is km, of which the main island occupies km. Beneath the gently rippling surface you will find teeming coral, giant clams, and brightly colored fish in every hue. In the north corner of the almost-atoll is Aitutaki's main island, with a handful of dwellings, an old church, and some gigantic Banyan trees, where the islanders will .

Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort is delighted to offer Aitutaki’s dedicated wedding venue, the absolutely stunning Oneroa Beach Chapel. Imagine saying “I do” with the World’s Most Beautiful Lagoon as your backdrop, you and your family and friends under the cool shade of the Chapel’s thatched canopy, the glorious lagoon glistening. Aitutaki is part of the Cook Islands, which in turn is a dependency of New Zealand. The island is categorized as “almost atoll” – a Darwinian term describing a fringing coral reef enclosing an island formed by volcanic activity in the tropical sea whereby a slow process of reef growth upwards and subsiding of the island results in a lagoon, forming a topography that is almost an atoll.

Introduction Carbonate sediment distribution in the lagoon of the almost-atoll Aitutaki (Cook Islands, south Pacific) has great importance as non-skeletal grains such as ooids and peloids were discovered in relatively high abundances (Rankey and Reeder, ).

This was a suprising discovery. The almost-atoll of Aitutaki is the northernmost island of the main southern Cook group (Figure 1). Aitutaki (Figure 2) is composed of a large remnant of the original volcanic cone and a ring of 13 small.

The Southern Group, with 90% of the land and 90% of the population, is physically diverse with a young volcanic island (Rarotonga), four raised-reef islands (Mangaia, ‘Âtiu, Ma‘uke and Miti‘âro), an almost-atoll (Aitutaki), two atolls (Manuae and Palmerston) and a sand-cay (Takûtea).

Aitutaki Features a main island Arutanga which it's highest point is Meters above sea level which is surrounded by a number of sister islands (known as motus) within the crystal blue lagoon. As Tourism is a main source of income in the islands kitesurfing accounts for over 50% in the island.

Pre-historic Aitutaki Geography. The Aitutaki almost atoll formed from a volcanic eruption on the floor bed, 5 kilometres below the South Pacific ocean. After Aitutaki rose above the Pacific ocean surface, coral formed on the shores of this "high island" (Like Rarotonga is today) Weathering eroded much of the basalt rock but the reef kept.

DESCRIPTIVE BACKGROUND The almost-atoll of Aitutaki consists of a ~km 2 triangular-shaped lagoon, flanked on the west by a km 2 mainland and on the east by a string of small coral islets (Stoddart and Gibbs ; Figure 1).Cited by: Atolls are ring-shaped reefs that occur in mid-ocean, often in linear island chains or archipelagoes.

The most extensive groups of atolls occur in the Pacific Ocean but there are also numerous atolls in the central Indian Ocean (Figure 1). The reef platforms that form atolls are generally characterized by reefs that reach sea level, especially.
